Attachment Styles

The Attachment Project
Attachment style is one of the areas that I explore with clients quite often. Many people are surpirsed to learn that attachment styles are developed in early childhood and often define how we will view and interact in relationships as adults.

Based on John Bowlby's attachment theory, there are four adult attachment styles including anxious-preoccupied, avoidant-dismissive, disorganized/fearful-avoidant, and secure. People with insecure attachment styles might have to put some intentional effort into resolving their attachment issues, in order to become securely attached.

I highly reccommend visiting The Attachment Project website to learn more and take a short quiz to determine your attachment style.

Running on Empty: Overcome Your Childhood Emotional Neglect
by Dr. Jonice Webb (ebook available for free checkout through the Hoopla app)

During her 20 years of practicing psychology, Dr. Webb discovered an “invisible factor” from childhood which weighs upon people in adulthood, sapping their joy, making them feel disconnected or unfulfilled or causing them to struggle with self-discipline. This factor (childhood emotional neglect) is so subtle that it goes virtually unnoticed by everyone while it does its silent damage to people’s lives. I found this book to be incredibly helpful in helping clients understand their experiences. I refer to it all the time. You can also check out her website by clicking here.

Dating Safety and Healthy Relationships

Online Dating and Dating App Safety Tips
More than 40 million Americans use online dating services or dating apps. As is the case when meeting someone new, whether online or offline, it’s wise to keep a few safety precautions in mind. Dating apps don’t conduct criminal background checks on users, so it’s up to each user to determine if they are comfortable meeting up with someone.
Click here to read the online and dating app safety tips article from the RAINN organization.

College Dating Safety Tips
I found this article to be very useful for in-person dating. I would add the following tip: Do not leave food and drinks unattended. If you are at a bar, place a coaster over your glass and give it to the bartender. They will know that you intend to come back, and they will protect it for you.

Healthy Boundaries in Relationships
Time and time again, I have seen people struggle with healthy boundaries because they may not know how to effectively set and maintain them. They may have also had parents or past partners who have no respect for boundaries or treat them as a one-way street. Boundaries in relationships work both ways: they create emotional health and are created by people with emotional health. They are something you can start working on today with the people close to you, and you’ll begin to notice a difference in your self-esteem, confidence, and emotional stability.

Financial abuse is a common tactic used by abusers to gain power and control in a relationship. The forms of financial abuse may be subtle or overt but in in general, financial abuse – along with emotional, physical, and sexual abuse – includes behaviors to intentionally manipulate, intimidate, and threaten the victim in order to entrap that person in the relationship. In some cases, financial abuse is present throughout the relationship and in other cases financial abuse becomes present when the survivor is attempting to leave or has left the relationship.
